The State Tretyakov Gallery is a vast collection of Russian national art spanning one thousand years. Whereas the main bulk of the collection is located in the historical building in Lavrushinsky Lane, the 20th centruy Russian and Soviet art can be seen in the New Tretyakov Galley building located on the Moscow River bank.
The New Tretyakov Gallery collection is especially valuable because it features famous works of Russian Avant-garde, some of which, specifically, the suprematist Black Square by Kazimir Malevich are considered the turning point in the development of art. The collection of the Soviet Social Realism is absolutely lovely and is worth stuidying, as well as its antagonist - the Soviet Undergound art. During our tour, we will talk about how Social Realism style was created by the Soviet government, the suppression of free artistic expression, the Bulldozer Exhibition and secret collections that only surfaced after the Soviet Union fell apart and censorship was lifted.
We will also review Russian contermporary art pieces.
At the end of the tour you have an option to take a walk through Museon Park and the so-called Park of the Fallen Idols, or a collection of Soviet-era monuments to Joseph Stalin, Leonid Brezhnev, Karl Marx and the founder of CheKa/KGB Felix Dzerzhinsky, and continue from there to the Gorky Park, take a walk along the Crimean Embankment to the Monument to Peter I, GES-2 and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
